Sweet, silly, little caterpillar Suffocating inside your cocoon Are you afraid of the heights your butterfly might soar through? Are you afraid the view might not be so good as the plain white asylum walls of your isolated tomb?

Fly, Fly away

Spread your wings and fly

Visual Score:

A caterpillar (the dancer) wrestles in her cocoon, unsure if she really wants to venture out of her shell. The tension builds as she begins breaking through the layers of the cocoon which have encompassed her for her entire existence. When she transforms into a butterfly it is tense and awkward at first, but in the end she is soaring gracefully.

Creative Symbolism:

This piece is obviously not just about nature or caterpillars, but is really about people and the tragedy of not reaching fully for our dreams. The cocoon and its restrictions are a metaphor for life's struggles, fears and goals we put off striving for in favor of more 'practical matters.' The butterfly represents the peace of mind that is achieved when following one's heart and not denying it.

Psychoacoustic Aspects:

The Caterpillar Meditation has a meditative psychoacoustic quality [see an Introduction to Psychoacoustics] that is stimulating as well as relaxing. The upper concentration of treble tones and steady low bass waves ground the movement from dissonance to consonance. The result is an evolving sonic journey with guided visual imagery.
